What is Toppal?

Toppal is an affiliate management platform purpose-built for Sharetribe marketplaces. It gives marketplace owners the tools to create, manage, and scale affiliate programs — turning your existing users and partners into a growth channel that brings new signups and transactions to your platform.

Key Concepts

Programs

A program defines the rules of your affiliate arrangement. When you create a program you configure:

• Trigger type — the event that qualifies a referral (e.g. a new user signup or a completed transaction).

• Payout type and value — whether affiliates earn a flat fee or a percentage, and how much.

• Advanced limits — caps on payouts per affiliate, expiration windows, and other guardrails.

You can run multiple programs simultaneously, each with its own rules and affiliate pool.

Affiliates

Affiliates are the people who promote your marketplace. Each affiliate receives a unique referral link they can share on social media, blogs, email newsletters, or anywhere else. When someone clicks that link and takes a qualifying action, the affiliate earns credit toward a payout.

Referred Users

Referred users are the marketplace members who arrived through an affiliate's referral link. Toppal tracks the connection between the referred user and the affiliate so you always know which affiliates are driving results.

Payouts

Payouts represent the rewards owed to affiliates when their referrals meet the conditions defined in your program. Toppal automatically calculates payout amounts based on your program rules. You can review pending payouts and process them manually, or automate disbursement with a supported integration.

How It Works

1. Admin creates a program — You define the referral rules, payout structure, and any limits.

2. Affiliates share referral links — Approved affiliates distribute their unique links to potential users.

3. Users sign up or transact — When a referred user completes the qualifying action on your Sharetribe marketplace, Toppal records the referral.

4. Payouts are generated — Toppal calculates what each affiliate has earned based on your program rules.

5. Admin pays affiliates — You review and process payouts, either manually or through an automated integration like Tremendous.

Integrations

Toppal connects with external services to power referral tracking and streamline operations:

• Sharetribe (required) — The core integration that enables referral tracking on your marketplace.

• Custom Email Domain — Send affiliate communications from your own domain instead of the default Toppal sender address.

• Tremendous — Automate affiliate payouts through Tremendous, supporting gift cards, prepaid cards, bank transfers, and more.

Customization

Toppal lets you tailor the affiliate experience to match your marketplace brand:

• Default branding — Upload your logo and set brand colours that appear across affiliate-facing pages and emails.

• Affiliate signup pages — Customize the public application page where potential affiliates apply to join your program.

• Email templates — Edit the welcome and notification emails sent to affiliates.

Toppal offers tiered subscription plans:

• Lite — Core features for marketplaces beginning to scale.

• Standard — Additional tools and higher limits.

• Pro — Advanced features including extended customization and integrations.
